A switch is the device intended for connection of several hosts of a computer network within one segment. Unlike the hub which extends the traffic from one online unit to all the rest, the swith transfers data only to directly receiver. The exception makes the broadcasting traffic (on FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF MAC-address) to all net hosts. It raises performance and safety of a network, saving other segments of a network of necessity (and possibilities) to handle the data which it did not intend. The swith works at channel level of model OSI and consequently generally can unite only hosts of one network to their MAC-addresses.
